| WA police record funding in state budget

The 2012/13 state budget is the biggest in history for West Australian police, with extra staff and new stations promised.
It also has $40 million for the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) in response to the damning Keelty report that revealed inadequacies in the service.

| Independent body to oversee prescribed burns

The emergency services minister Troy Buswell has hinted that there will be money in the state budget for fighting fires.
Fire fighting resources were stretched over the summer, he says.
The WA government is also in the process of establishing an Office of Bushfire Risk Management, one of the recommendations of the Keelty report.

An independent body responsible for signing off on all prescribed burns in WA has been launched in response to the Margaret River bushfires.
The state government promised to establish the Office of Bushfire Risk Management in response to the Keelty report into the November fires, which destroyed 40 homes.

The Keelty inquiry found the emergency response on the day suffered from a lack of co-ordination, and his report specifically found that the SECG should have convened earlier.
It recommended that Mr O'Callaghan should take "a more active role" in getting the group together sooner. However, the Keelty report presented no threat whatsoever to the popular Police Commissioner's position.
In fact, Mr O'Callaghan's criticism of FESA during the Keelty inquiry and afterwards had a lot to do with the Government's decision to overhaul the agency and sack its chief executive, Jo Harrison-Ward.

| Vic fire brigade staff stop work

The workers, including administrative staff and mechanics who are responsible for the upkeep of firefighting vehicles, held a rally outside the MFB's city headquarters during a four-hour work stoppage today.
United Firefighters Union state secretary Peter Marshall said the workers, among the lowest paid in their fields, were demanding a 4.5 per cent pay rise each year for the next three years.

| Another year's delay for firefighting vessels

THE fire brigade's ability to fight fires in Melbourne's ports is set to get a badly needed boost after it put out a call for tenders for two large firefighting vessels.
The Victorian branch secretary of the United Firefighters Union, Peter Marshall, lashed the Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board, saying they had taken ''nine years to put a tender out''.
